Chicken-Egg-Problem of Digital Platforms

Prerequisite for survey participation

The survey is aimed at people who have experience building and/or operating digital platforms in two-sided or multi-sided markets.
The survey takes about 12 minutes to complete.

General project presentation

Thank you for participating in our survey. Smarte.Land.Regionen is a research project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) (grant number: 2818SL001). Fraunhofer IESE is responsible for the implementation of the research project. In the project, the Smarte.Land.Regionen platform is being developed to broker technical solutions between solution providers and rural counties in order to enable an improvement in the provision of public services in rural regions. The technical development of the Smarte.Land.Regionen platform is accompanied by the establishment of a business and operator model, which must be specifically designed for the municipal sector. To do this, the Smarte.Land.Regionen platform needs a platform business model to operate the platform successfully.

What is a platform business?

We define a platform business model as an operation model of a digital platform that mediates an asset (e.g., a product) between (at least) two sides of a market – providers and consumers. The figure below shows a platform business in general (Airbnb) and in relation to the Smarte.Land.Regionen platform.

In the research project, as with many other platforms, the so-called chicken-egg problem arises: Who do I get to join my platform first – the providers or the consumers?

In order to solve this problem for the Smart.Land.Regionen platform, Fraunhofer IESE would like to launch a survey among the companies of the developed platform. This is intended to clarify the question of who should use the platform first: the counties or the solution providers?
